Innovation, research, and development are crucial for safer, effective, and more reliable electronic components that KYOCERA AVX delivers to customers. With a focus on continued innovation, the company uses the cloud to consistently exceed customer expectations.
KYOCERA AVX is a Google Workspace user, with employees adopting Google Apps like Drive and Gmail to better collaborate, creating an environment that fosters innovation and delivers on its mission.
Although the company uses many cloud services across the organization, most data movement taking place at KYOCERA AVX is within Google Workspace. As usage grew within the company, an increasing amount of data was uploaded, and IT had little to no visibility or control of the data in the cloud. This data included client contracts, employee and customer information, intellectual property, and other confidential records.
Prompted by the revelation that the company needed a clear picture of risk exposure, the Global Head of Information Security & Privacy at KYOCERA AVX, Zack Moody, sought a solution to help them discover and gain control over sensitive data across Google Workspace and to meet growing compliance requirements, including GDPR.
First, the company had to understand its employees’ usage patterns and what data it had in the cloud. “We wanted to understand what cloud services users were accessing and the data we had in the cloud to get an understanding of our risk exposure,” explained Moody.

Today, KYOCERA AVX uses a range of Netskope solutions to increase visibility on Google Workspace and secure its cloud applications. These include the Netskope Next Gen Secure Web Gateway (SWG) for cloud inline security and threat protection, the Netskope Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB) to quickly identify and manage the use of cloud applications, and Netskope Data Loss Prevention (DLP) to discover, monitor, and protect sensitive data.
“Netskope lets us use Google Workspace to its full capability. We can see how our data is being used, if it is being shared with third parties, and take action to mitigate risk,” says Moody.
The company uses Netskope to uncover which cloud services users are accessing. “With Netskope, we are able to view important contextual details around our usage—including users, devices, and activities—and assess our risk by identifying sensitive files in Google Workspace and seeing if and how they are being shared. We can easily monitor unsanctioned cloud services being used and can take action like blocking the activity or coaching our users to use Workspace instead.”

Using Netskope, KYOCERA AVX created profiles for confidential documents and personally identifiable information (PII). Netskope discovered content in Google Workspace against these profiles, identifying millions of files, thousands of which were a match for the profiles.
With this visibility, KYOCERA AVX was able to see who the content owners were and understand the sharing status of content, including the percentage of sensitive data that was shared outside of the company. The organization can now discover content as it’s being uploaded and act accordingly. “Using DLP features and access controls by Netskope, we have been able to secure personal data for GDPR cloud compliance” says Moody.
In addition to collaborating with third parties, KYOCERA AVX has thousands of employees worldwide who need anytime, anywhere access to data. With VPNs proving cumbersome, the team started looking to the cloud for answers, specifically, how to drive secure and effective collaboration through Google Workspace and ensure sensitive information does not leave the company.
With Netskope, the organization has real-time visibility and granular policy-based controls for users accessing Google Workspace apps for managed devices. It can also allow users to access unsanctioned applications to view content but restrict other activities such as uploads and shares to protect sensitive data.
KYOCERA AVX relies on Netskope to ensure secure and compliant usage for Google Workspace apps today. “In the future, we can extend real-time security policies like DLP, threat protection and compliance in Google Workspace to Google Cloud Platform and the web, through a single security platform” says Moody.
