Integrations and new method provides cloud data protection for the “last mile”
Netskope, the leader in cloud security, today announced the Netskope Information Rights Management (IRM) Program. The program leverages integrations from Microsoft, TITUS, and Vera, combined with the contextual awareness of the Netskope Active Platform to protect data beyond the reach of any control point. This protects so-called “last-mile” data such as that downloaded to a USB drive, shared from device to device via Bluetooth, or resident in a Shadow IT cloud service or an unmanaged endpoint. This data-centric classification, control, and protection can only be unlocked by the customer or an intended recipient. The patented Netskope Context Engine provides insight into the “who,” “what,” “when,” and “where” surrounding the data, enabling Netskope customers to invoke IRM policies during critical moments such as when employees need to share data and collaborate with a third party in a secure manner.
According to the Netskope Cloud Report, the average enterprise uses more than 1,000 cloud services and users are increasingly accessing them from remote locations and mobile devices that are both managed or unmanaged by IT. This escalates the importance of making IRM not overly reliant on access to a particular app or suite of apps. Netskope IRM policies use the patented Netskope Context Engine to capture transaction details such as a user’s location, device, device classification, activity (such as “upload,” “download,” “share,” and “post”), and the presence of a third-party collaborator.
Netskope uses these transaction details and applies cloud data loss prevention (DLP) to determine the sensitivity of the data. If deemed sensitive, Netskope can now classify, label, protect, and enforce usage policies on the data through integrations with partners such as Microsoft, TITUS, and Vera. These relationships are key components in Netskope’s IRM and data-control strategy, giving customers the ability to apply advanced data classification, file security, and tracking of the data itself.
“Every customer eventually asks the ‘last mile’ question: What are you doing to protect data where you don’t have a presence?” said Sanjay Beri, founder and CEO, Netskope. “By virtue of being in the cloud and built to govern cloud services, Netskope already has a significant head start on that challenge. Now, with our strategic IRM partners, we’re helping our customers address the ‘last mile’ by providing data protection that stays with the data, period. This is a significant milestone for the industry and something that will provide our customers will the best data protection available in the market.”
“With the ongoing avalanche of data breaches, businesses today are begging for a different, more profound approach to security,” said Ajay Arora, CEO and Co-founder of Vera. “The only way to achieve true protection is to secure the data itself, and Netskope is addressing this challenge head-on. Together, we’re giving enterprises the ability to establish persistent, dynamic protection over sensitive information at the moment it matters most — in the cloud, and through the last mile.”
“For years the industry has been riddled by challenges associated with cloud data security, and Netskope has worked to address them with sound technology and pragmatism when it comes to user experience,” said TITUS CEO Tim Upton. “Netskope’s IRM Program illustrates their commitment to cloud data security, and the integration we’ve built together allows our customers to extend user and machine-driven classification beyond the reach of any control point.”
