Established during the Spanish Civil War, GBfoods’ mission to provide affordable food grounded in local traditions and flavors is as relevant today as it was in 1937. The company has blossomed into a prosperous multinational organization, present in more than 50 countries across Europe and Africa. Many of the company’s brands have graced consumers’ kitchens for over 150 years, to the point where they are now an integral part of the local culture.

Complete control for improved compliance
In recent years, GBfoods has pursued a successful growth strategy that included several mergers and acquisitions (M&As). This very success created a standardization need for its infrastructure and security teams. Josep Toledo, IT Operations & Services Manager at GBfoods, explains: “Having acquired several companies over the past five years, we found ourselves using a range of incompatible connectivity and security solutions, which added complexity to our operations.”
The company also required a more centralized approach to security across its over 40 locations. Oscar López is GBfoods’ Cybersecurity Manager: “Security is a corporate function at GBfoods with no dedicated local-level staff. I therefore require solutions that can give me centralized control and visibility.”
Changing working practices has also presented challenges. GBfoods has embraced hybrid working, with all of its employees working 50% of the time from home. The approach is helping boost the company’s talent pipeline, but it demands ensuring that remote workers can connect through high-performing and secure solutions.
Hybrid working is just one element of GBfoods’ innovation focus. López comments: “We are making big bets on our systems, not least by embracing cloud solutions to drive efficiency and enable our overall goal of helping to make food more affordable. This approach means doing things differently when it comes to infrastructure and security.”
We are making big bets on our systems, not least by embracing cloud solutions to drive efficiency and enable our overall goal of helping to make food more affordable. This approach means doing things differently when it comes to infrastructure and security.
Toledo and López started working at GBfoods at about the same time. From the outset, they decided to take a collaborative and integrated approach to working together. Toledo explains: “We agreed that everything relating to defining and building the security framework should come from the security team, and that my infrastructure team would implement the solutions and make sure that they run smoothly. This clear delineation of duties has helped to ensure a smooth deployment.”
Working together, GBfoods’ security and infrastructure teams have installed the Netskope SSE platform. The SSE platform is integrated with Netskope ZTNA Next for high-performing, “zero trust” access to all private apps from any location. The company also uses Netskope Cloud Exchange tools for one-click integrations with Splunk, CrowdStrike, and Microsoft Defender as part of its extended detection and response (XDR) capability.
“Netskope has given us an easy-to-deploy, centralized cloud platform that has allowed us to retire legacy environments that ran VPNs with direct connections,” says López. “It’s a highly integrated approach that enables us to quickly connect and secure workers from any location. What’s more, thanks to the high levels of documentation and support, I am comfortable handing the system over to the infrastructure team to operate efficiently.”
Netskope has reduced the time my team spends providing IT support for connectivity issues. This is hugely valuable considering our dispersed footprint.
With Netskope, GBfoods’ employees benefit from a high-quality experience regardless of location. Netskope ZTNA Next allows remote workers to simply turn on their devices and start accessing secure cloud applications without having to navigate a VPN. “Netskope combines the best user experience with the best security—something that doesn’t often come together,” says López.
An improved user experience means that Toledo’s team is called on for help less often. “Netskope has reduced the time my team spends providing IT support for connectivity issues,” he says. “This is hugely valuable considering our dispersed footprint.”
Compliance has also improved. “I have gone from zero visibility of remote users before Netskope, to having complete control over the applications they can navigate to,” says López. “What’s more, with Netskope just 2% of access blocks are false positives—and that’s out of the box. Usually, I have to work with vendors to customize system parameters just to drop below 5%.”
The solution supports GBfoods’ move toward edge environments. “With VPNs, you need to obtain logs and correlate data to understand threats. This takes time and makes it difficult to block threats at the edge,” says López. “Netskope is helping us evolve to XDR at the edge by providing the visibility to block threats in real time.”
Next, the company plans to migrate its ERP to the cloud and transition to a fully cloud, fully remote organization. López concludes: “As we evolve our infrastructure and security, performance will be key. Given our experience with Netskope to date, it will likely play a role in helping us move to our new end state.”
