What is the Telecommunications (Security) Act? link link

The Telecommunications (Security) Act 2021 (TSA) strengthens the UK’s public communications networks by enforcing high security standards for providers. It mandates measures in the Telecommunications Security Code of Practice, including separation of critical functions from exposed edge equipment, adoption of zero trust principles for all management access, rigorous third-party risk controls, and continuous monitoring with sensors and analytics to detect anomalies.

The challenge link link

Telecom providers run large, complex networks that must stay online without interruption. Tracking every external-facing device across vast cloud environments often creates blind spots. Securing the exposed edge while keeping core routing intact demands clear separation of critical systems. Thousands of third-party suppliers add further complexity, requiring strict risk scoring and other checks. Without a unified view, these moving parts lead to fragmented defenses and open the door to advanced threats.

Netskope's solutions for UK Telecommunications (Security) Act link link

  • Network separation and zero trust: Netskope’s zero trust network access (ZTNA) establishes strict physical and logical boundaries that isolate exposed edge equipment from core networks. It ensures all privileged management access is authenticated, encrypted, and tightly restricted using role based access control (RBAC).
  • Third-party supplier management: During procurement, Netskope’s cloud access security broker (CASB) uses a cloud confidence index (CCI) to dynamically assess the security posture of over 85,000 cloud suppliers. ZTNA acts as a strict mediation point, ensuring third-party administrators only receive the minimum necessary access, which is continuously logged and monitored.
  • Asset inventory and edge data protection: Netskope CASB and device intelligence work together to maintain an accurate, up-to-date inventory of all externally facing cloud services and devices. Meanwhile, CASB and SaaS security posture management (SSPM) actively scan to prevent exposed edge equipment from hosting sensitive data.
  • Continuous monitoring and anomaly detection: By combining ZTNA with advanced analytics, Netskope continuously baselines normal network traffic to rapidly identify, investigate, and address anomalous or malicious activity. Additionally, device intelligence specifically identifies and blocks unauthorized rogue devices from logically accessing the management plane.
  • Alignment with NCSC CAF business processes: Netskope provides overarching supplementary controls and extensive reporting capabilities that directly map to the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) Cyber Assessment Framework (CAF) guidance, helping telecommunication providers fulfill broader organizational requirements for governance, risk management, asset management, network resilience, and staff awareness.

Key questions answered in this guide link link

  • How can organizations prevent exposed edge equipment from hosting sensitive data under the telecommunications security act?
  • How does the platform maintain a record of all externally facing systems to comply with the telecommunications security act?
  • How does Netskope’s solution secure the management plane and privileged access as required by the telecommunications security act?
  • How are third-party administrator activities monitored and recorded to satisfy the telecommunications security act?
  • What mechanism assesses third-party supplier risks to meet the obligations of the telecommunications security act?
