Founded in 2001, BuySell Technologies Co., Ltd. has achieved an exceptional 67.8% year-over-year revenue growth rate in the reuse industry. As the company expanded its business, grew its workforce, and actively pursued mergers and acquisitions (M&A), the limitations of its existing perimeter-based security model became increasingly apparent. To address challenges including growing use of networks outside the corporate perimeter, the proliferation of shadow IT, inconsistent security policies across group companies, and the risk of data leakage in the cloud, BuySell Technologies deployed Netskope SASE/SSE and transitioned to a zero trust security model. The rollout began in 2025 and was completed across the entire group in August 2026, establishing a security foundation for continued growth. Looking ahead, the company also plans to expand visibility into shadow AI.

The Challenge

Rapid growth and M&A push perimeter-based security to its limits, driving a shift to zero trust with SASE/SSE

Guided by its mission, “to become a bridge that connects what is precious, transcending people and time,” BuySell Technologies operates a growing reuse business. For the fiscal year ended December 2025, consolidated net sales surpassed ¥100 billion, an increase of 67.8% year over year. A key driver of this industry-leading growth has been the company’s development of an in-home purchasing model for “hidden assets”—valuable items, particularly those owned by seniors, that have remained unused in their homes. BuySell Technologies also makes extensive use of data, AI, and other digital technologies to reduce reliance on individual expertise and enable data-driven management. Through new store openings and M&A, the company has expanded its in-store purchasing business, bringing the total number of stores across the group to approximately 500 as of April 2026. It also serves diverse reuse needs through multiple channels, including auctions and e-commerce.

The reuse business involves handling personal information in many aspects of its operations. As BuySell Technologies grew rapidly, the limitations of its existing perimeter-based security model became increasingly apparent. Takahiro Senbo, General Manager, Information Systems Department, Product Development Division, explains the challenges.

“We develop our core system in-house to manage the entire process from appraisal and purchasing through to sales. When employees worked at customers’ homes or in stores, they accessed internal systems from company-issued devices through a VPN. However, as our workforce and store network expanded, employees increasingly needed to work outside our existing closed network, making it more difficult to maintain consistent endpoint security. Integrating companies acquired through M&A into the existing closed network in order to standardize security policies also required significant time, effort, and cost. At the same time, we needed greater visibility into the cloud services being adopted by individual departments.”

To establish security that could respond quickly and flexibly as the business grew, BuySell Technologies turned to zero trust. A cloud-based approach would allow the company to apply consistent security policies across the group, regardless of whether users were inside or outside the corporate network, while strengthening governance. In 2023, the company began its transition from perimeter-based security to zero trust.

From both an operational and security perspective, having CASB, SWG [Secure Web Gateway], DLP [Data Loss Prevention], ZTNA [Zero Trust Network Access], and other capabilities integrated into a single SASE/SSE platform was another major deciding factor.

Comparing three SASE/SSE solutions and selecting Netskope to centrally manage multiple security capabilities on a single platform

To build its zero trust environment, BuySell Technologies shortlisted three SASE/SSE solutions and evaluated them through proof-of-concept (PoC) testing. “All three solutions provided the core capabilities we needed for a security infrastructure that could replace our perimeter-based model,” says Motoki Maehara of the Information Systems Department, Product Development Division, before explaining what ultimately set Netskope apart.

“Of the three solutions, Netskope offered the strongest CASB [Cloud Access Security Broker] capabilities, which were particularly important to us. It had advantages in areas such as shadow IT visibility, log visibility, flexible policy configuration to meet business requirements—for example, allowing users to view content while preventing uploads—user coaching capabilities that provide warnings and guidance, and domain identification. Because our employees use iPhones and iPads when making in-home visits, iOS support was also essential. Netskope also met requirements such as helping us isolate and troubleshoot issues in a zero trust environment. From both an operational and security perspective, having CASB, SWG [Secure Web Gateway], DLP [Data Loss Prevention], ZTNA [Zero Trust Network Access], and other capabilities integrated into a single SASE/SSE platform was another major deciding factor.”

BuySell Technologies selected Tokyo Electron Device (TED) as its implementation and deployment partner. “TED had extensive knowledge and experience with Netskope, and through its support during the PoC, we felt it was a partner we could trust,” Maehara says.

The evaluation process began in 2023 with PoCs of Netskope and two other products. After comparing functionality and operational usability, BuySell Technologies conducted a second PoC to further validate Netskope’s capabilities. Based on those results, the company formally selected Netskope in April 2025 and began implementation, starting with a small-scale rollout toward the end of the year.

Expanding Netskope across the group through phased validation while building in-house operational capabilities with hands-on support

BuySell Technologies achieves zero trust by installing the Netskope agent on company-issued devices and managing and controlling all traffic from those devices through Netskope. Using mobile device management (MDM) to deploy the agent enabled the company to complete installation across all endpoints quickly and efficiently.

Takato Taguchi of the Information Systems Department, Product Development Division, explains the company’s approach to the organization-wide rollout. “We first deployed Netskope within the Information Systems Department and verified the operation of groupware and other applications, and the development team then tested integration with our core systems. Next, representatives selected from each department used the environment so we could identify issues, such as being unable to connect to cloud services they were using. We addressed those issues one by one by adjusting Netskope configurations and taking other appropriate measures. We also created a dedicated Netskope support channel in our internal communication tool to handle employee inquiries. After beginning the rollout in 2025, we expanded Netskope to our group companies and completed the group-wide deployment in August 2026.”

As the Information Systems Department worked toward managing Netskope internally, the team also needed to build new operational knowledge and expertise. “During implementation, TED provided timely advice and technical support on a wide range of issues through our regular meetings. During the organization-wide rollout, we also used its implementation support services and received extensive assistance. Now that we are in the operational phase, TED provides regular reports through its reporting service, and we use those insights to improve our operations. Through TED’s ongoing, hands-on support, we have been able to build the knowledge and expertise we need to bring Netskope operations in-house,” Maehara says.

By addressing the challenges that come with expanding AI adoption and building on the zero trust foundation provided by Netskope, we aim to support the company’s continued growth.

Strengthening security through greater visibility today, with AI security as the next step

Security becomes stronger when it depends less on human intervention, because people can make mistakes. “The Netskope agent runs in the background without requiring users to think about it. With our previous VPN system, employees had to enable the VPN each time they needed it. Netskope, by contrast, connects to cloud services through an agent that remains on the device, so our basic policy is to keep it enabled at all times. Currently, users can still disable the agent if they encounter a business-impacting issue, such as being unable to access a service. Going forward, we are working toward an operating model in which disabling the agent when an issue occurs requires a password managed by the Information Systems Department, helping us ensure that protection remains enabled,” Taguchi says.

Netskope has enabled BuySell Technologies to control access to websites that pose security risks while also gaining visibility into shadow IT. Maehara explains how the company plans to build on that visibility. “Now that we can identify shadow IT, we will use the data we have gained to implement appropriate controls. Going forward, we also want to detect and control how data is moved and exchanged in the cloud, as well as data being taken out of remote environments. With DLP, we plan to detect and block the leakage of sensitive information in real time.”

Finally, Senbo discusses the company’s plans for the future. “As AI adoption expands within our company, we are considering AI controls through Netskope One AI Security so that we can gain visibility into which AI services are approved by the company and which are not. TED continues to provide us with the latest information and recommendations on AI controls and related technologies. We also want to use the visibility provided by Netskope to standardize the tools and services used across the group, helping us reduce security risks and optimize costs. By addressing the challenges that come with expanding AI adoption and building on the zero trust foundation provided by Netskope, we aim to support the company’s continued growth.”

Guided by its vision, “Leading the circular economy with exceptional people and new technologies,” BuySell Technologies continues to expand its reuse business. Zero trust powered by Netskope SASE/SSE provides a security foundation to support the company as it works toward realizing that vision.
