What is the EU AI Act? link link

The European Union established a new legal framework on August 1, 2024, to govern any company developing or using AI within the European Union. Its primary purpose is to ensure these systems remain safe, ethical, and respectful of human rights. The law requires organizations to sort their AI tools into four risk categories: Prohibited, High-Risk, General-Purpose, and Minimal Risk. Depending on the category, you must implement specific controls for data governance, human oversight, and system transparency.

The challenge link link

Organizations struggle to meet the EU AI Act because the regulation demands clear classification of every AI system by risk level, but most companies do not have full visibility into where and how AI is used across teams and vendors. Organizations must also put in place strict controls for high-risk systems, including risk management, data governance, documentation, human oversight, and ongoing monitoring, which requires new processes, skills, and coordination across legal, security, and business teams. Many organizations depend on third‑party AI providers, making it difficult to verify compliance, track data usage, and ensure transparency. The need to keep records, report incidents, and continuously assess systems adds further operational load that most organizations are not set up for today.

Netskope's solutions for the EU AI Act link link

  • Scoring AI vendor risk: Netskope uses the cloud confidence index (CCI) to rate over 85,000 cloud and AI providers. Each vendor gets a safety score from 0 to 100 based on technical details and public records. This helps you instantly classify if an AI tool is high-risk.
  • Controlling sensitive data: Using data loss prevention (DLP), organizations can identify and classify sensitive data based on predefined policies, and where integrated, apply labels to that data. These policies can then enforce controls, such as blocking or restricting uploads, to prevent sensitive information, including personal or regulated data, from being shared with AI applications without authorization.
  • Prohibited systems: The Netskope platform has inline controls that can control access to prohibited AI systems.
  • Providing human oversight: Under the Regulation, companies operating in the EU must monitor high-risk AI. Netskope One Advanced Analytics generates reports on employee AI activity and usage trends, helping managers easily spot system misuse.
  • Securing AI from cyberattacks: Threat protection and SaaS security posture management (SSPM) help identify risks in cloud applications, including supported AI tools. SSPM identifies misconfigurations and weak settings, and threat protection detects and blocks known malicious activity.
  • Warning users in real time: Netskope identifies and categorizes the use of AI tools, making this information visible to users through prompts or coaching messages, including whether the tool meets approved policy standards. The platform can also label and classify content generated by AI as machine-generated, provided it has access to where that content is stored.
  • Reporting of incidents: Netskope monitors AI providers for incident reports such as data breaches, and reflects this intelligence in its cloud confidence index (CCI) rating. This information can then be used to adjust access, for example, restricting use of the AI tool or limiting what data users can share with it during the incident.
