BSI is a business standards and improvement company that partners with more than 77,500 clients globally across multiple industry sectors. BSI is working with Netskope to create a seamless and trusted network security operation worldwide with enhanced security and a better user experience.
Netskope One Security Service Edge (SSE) – Safely enable your hybrid workforce by applying a cloud-delivered and AI-powered data-centric approach to security enforcement.
Netskope One NG SWG – The foundation for SSE web and cloud inline security providing threat and data protection.
Netskope NewEdge Network – Unified, machine-learning enhanced data loss prevention (DLP) for cloud, web, email , private apps, and devices to help reduce risk.
Enhanced security through effective Next-Gen SWG (CASB + SWG)
Increased visibility at the application instance level
Enhanced user experience with seamless global platform
Cybersecurity is important to BSI’s clients, which makes it crucial to BSI. Mike Pitman, CISO at BSI, explains: “BSI is dependent on IT systems for day-to-day operations. Failure to protect against cyber breaches or other security incidents, whether from state-sponsored, criminal, or other sources, could result in disruption or suspension of IT services, impacting our trading operations and loss of data. Protecting against inadvertent loss of our, or our clients’ or other stakeholders’, data is an opportunity to ensure BSI avoids fines, a loss of client confidence, adverse impact to our reputation, and/or litigation.”
BSI operates worldwide, a global reach that can add complexity to security processes and infrastructure, potentially slowing down the business. Its China operation is a case in point. Michael Smithers, Head of Security Operations and Architecture at BSI, comments: “Setting up and managing cybersecurity in China has in the past required significant modifications to our existing infrastructure, which increases complexity, cost, and risk. The approach also required local teams to manage these systems, complicating our global cybersecurity operations.”
Against this backdrop, BSI’s legacy secure web gateway (SWG) vendor was not living up to its expectations. “With only five months until we renewed with the incumbent, we faced a tight deadline to replace our SWG or risk being locked in for another three years. We had to act quickly to find a new solution that could scale with our needs,” adds Smithers.
Cybersecurity is a competitive differentiator for us, helping us to attract new clients, particularly from industries that value robust data protection.
Following a competitive process, BSI selected the Netskope One Next-Gen Secure Web Gateway (Next-Gen SWG), part of the Netskope One Security Service Edge (SSE). The Next-Gen SWG provides inline visibility and control across web, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solutions, cloud services, and private apps, and provides integrated data loss prevention (DLP) and threat protection capabilities.
To meet its needs in China and a key differentiator of the Netskope solution, BSI chose the China Elite service, which extends Netskope’s global NewEdge network and security capabilities into Mainland China. NewEdge China is focused on fast domestic and international access and tailored to meet the unique needs of servicing user, site, application, and cloud traffic in this region. While China Elite specifically addressed BSI’s requirements in Mainland China, the global coverage of NewEdge provided a single infrastructure to address BSI users and sites anywhere in the world—with the same security and optimized user and application experience.
The deployment was accelerated and supported by Netskope’s Professional Services team and Cloudrise. “Netskope stood out for its comprehensive and seamless tech stack, which nicely balances capability with simplicity and performance. What’s more, its approachable team provided clear, direct answers, making it the obvious choice for our cybersecurity needs,” says Smithers. “Our legacy vendor has grown through acquisition and there was no one person who could explain how the tech stack worked. Netskope’s people know the stack end to end, and their approach was never overly corporate.”
While migrations are always fraught with risk and can cause customers to hesitate, the deployment of Netskope could not have been smoother and met BSI’s tight deadline with time to spare, providing a seamless transition for their business to a more modern, converged network and security solution.
Brian Brady, Security Operations Team Leader at BSI, comments: “We deployed Netskope’s solution across 6,000 users in just two months, seamlessly integrating diverse teams and regions. The process was remarkably straightforward, with none of the major issues that could arise with rollouts on this scale.”
Smithers agrees: “That’s the differentiator for Netskope for us. The deployment was very smooth—in fact, one of the smoothest I’ve ever been involved in.”

The key benefit of the Netskope solution for BSI is simple: It provides the levels of cybersecurity BSI requires and delivers value for money. “Netskope’s interface is exceptionally intuitive,” says Brady. “It just works—streamlining our processes and enhancing usability.”
According to BSI, Netskope embodies the “simplify and reuse” principle, ensuring consistent policies and uninterrupted service for employees as they move globally.
“Our people work across a diverse array of countries, environments, and clients,” says Smithers. “Thanks to Netskope we now only rarely have any technology issues, even as employees connect through different networks and locations.”
“Netskope has simplified our global operations by eliminating the need for separate consoles and complex deployments,” adds Smithers. “Its clear vision and the team’s deep understanding of integrations made it a big win for us.”
Another key benefit for BSI is the Next-Gen SWG’s ability to differentiate between tenants. Smithers explains: “We interface with the various platforms our clients use. Netskope’s standout feature is its ability to drill down to the application instance level, which sharpens our visibility into whether interactions are with our own environment or others. This granular insight allows us to identify patterns and potentially establish more targeted controls in the future.”
Looking ahead, BSI believes that Netskope will support it as it scales and its needs change. “Netskope’s integration of SWG and CASB into Next-Gen SWG for single-pass inspection and other technologies is a strategic win for BSI, both now and as the business grows and its requirements change. We are leveraging harmonious capabilities without the complexity of additional products and configurations.”
